There is often much confusion around this topic. We are frequently asked, which breed is smaller the Toy or the Miniature Cavoodle? Read on to find out the differences and classifications when it comes to this breed.
When it comes to adorable, family-friendly dogs, Cavoodles are at the top of the list. In fact, they’re currently the most popular dog breed in Australia!
Cavoodles, a delightful mix of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle, come in two primary sizes: Toy and Miniature. Understanding the differences between these two can help potential owners decide which size best suits their lifestyle.
Classifying Toy Cavoodles & Mini Cavoodles
Technically speaking, if a Toy Poodle is bred with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a Toy Cavoodle will result. And if a Mini Poodle is bred with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a Mini Cavoodle will result. With the former being the smaller of the two.
When it comes to measurements, it might surprise you that the difference between Toy and Mini breeds can often be slight.
Dog height is measured from the ground to the top of the shoulder. The height ranges for Cavoodles are approximately as follows:
Toy Cavoodles stand between 25-30cm
Mini Cavoodles stand between 31-38cm
Approximate weight ranges for these breeds are:
Toy Cavoodles between 2-5kg
Mini Cavoodles between 6-12kg
Genetics
As a general guide you can expect that puppies bred from a Toy Poodle will be smaller than those that result from breeding with a Mini Poodle. However, this is not the case 100% of the time. It can occasionally be the case that a Toy Poodle parent will have a puppy that falls into the Mini Cavoodle measurement expectations, and vice versa. Just like with human genetics, canine genetics are very complex and there are always exceptions. An experienced breeder should be able to provide some insight into what approximate size you can expect a particular puppy or litter to be as an adult, based on various factors such as parents size, puppy size for age and more.
Keep in mind that the size of both parents needs to be taken into consideration. If you’d like to find out more information about these dog breeds see some of our other blog posts here.
